In this guide I will show you how to install the Mate desktop on Ubuntu as-well as other Debian based distributions. Some of the other distributions that this will work on are:
- Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Xubuntu
- Linux Mint
- Elementary OS
Mate desktop is very similar to the older Gnome (Gnome 2) so if you miss that kind of desktop then give Mate a try.
Install Mate Desktop on Ubuntu
You can install MATE Desktop by adding the following repository and then installing the corresponding packages. To add the repository enter the following command.
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-mate-dev/xenial-mate
After adding the repository we will need to update our available packages list, we can do this and automatically install MATE Desktop afterwards with the following command.
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install mate -y
The following is optional but you are probably better off installing this as-well, otherwise you will be more than likely be missing some applications/features.
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-mate-desktop -y
Remove MATE Desktop From Ubuntu
If you decided you no longer wish to use Mate Desktop then you can remove it with the following command.
sudo apt-get remove mate -y
