In this guide I will be showing you how to install the Gnome desktop on Debian or Ubuntu. This guide should also work for the following Linux distributions:
- Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Xubuntu
- Linux Mint
- Elementary OS
Install Gnome Desktop Environment On Ubuntu
You can install the Gnome desktop environment on Ubuntu or one of the above distros automatically using apt-get. Just run the following command, logout and change your desktop choice at the login screen to Gnome.
sudo apt-get install gnome-shell
Or if you prefer, you can install the Ubuntu Gnome Desktop with the following command instead.
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-gnome-desktop
Remove Gnome Desktop Environment From Ubuntu
If you tried out Gnome and decided that you don’t like it, you can remove it by running one of the following based on which one you chose to install.
sudo apt-get remove gnome-shell
sudo apt-get remove ubuntu-gnome-desktop
